Department of control and information systems

Characteristics of the Department

The Department of Control and Information Systems (referred to as DCIS) is currently being profiled in the accredited study field of 19 Cybernetics, structured as a 3-year bachelor's, 2-year master's, and 3-year doctoral program at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the University of Žilina. All these mentioned study programs are accredited by the decision of the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic, No. 2015-18768/47288:2-15A0 and 2015-18768/47299:3-15A0. In 2022, they underwent harmonization in accordance with the internal quality system at UNIZA.

The scientific research of DCIS employees is focused on the analysis and synthesis of physical-cybernetic systems, ranging from theoretical models to solving current practical projects, including the implementation of control and information systems. In some areas, DCIS holds an exclusive position in Slovakia, particularly in expertise related to the analysis and synthesis of railway interlocking and signalling systems, focusing on their safety. The domain of reliable and secure transmission and processing of information in controlling selected critical processes, whether in complex industrial technologies, transportation, or other application areas, provides ample scope for the activities of the entire department collective. Implementing operational technologies provides an opportunity for significant application in crucial sectors of the national economy.

The department is divided into two sections: the Department of Control Systems and the Department of Information Systems.

The department has 2 sections: Section of Control Systems and Section of Information Systems.

Historical Development of the Department

The origin and development of the Department of Control and Information Systems are intertwined with the establishment and history of the Czech Technical University in Prague, the University of Railways in Prague, the University of Transport and Communications in Žilina, and the University of Žilina.

From the Czech Technical University in Prague, the Faculty of Railway Engineering was separated on October 1, 1953, under the name University of Railways. Initially, it comprised five faculties: Construction, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Transportation, and Military. Following the relocation of the university to Žilina (1959 - 1962), it was renamed the University of Transport, with one of its three faculties becoming the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

The Department of Interlocking, Signalling and Communications: 1953 - 1992, during which:

  • 1953 – 1962: Part of the Electrical Engineering Faculty of the University of Railways in Prague.
  • 1962 – 1980: Part of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Transport and Communications in Žilina.
  • 1980 – 1992: Part of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Transport and Communications in Žilina.

The Department of Information and Safety Systems: 1992 – 2002, during which:

  • 1992 – 1996: Within the Electrical Engineering Faculty of the University of Transport and Communications in Žilina.
  • 1996 – 2002: Within the Electrical Engineering Faculty of the University of Žilina in Žilina.

The Department of Control and Information Systems: since 2002.
