Department profile

The Department of Control and Information Systems (hereinafter referred to as DCIS) currently profiles itself in the accredited Field of study No. 19 Cybernetics, conceived as a 3-year bachelor's degree study, 2-year master degree study, and 3-year doctoral degree study, at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the University of Žilina. All the mentioned study programs are accredited by the decision of the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic No. 2015-18768 / 47288: 2-15A0 and 2015-18768 / 47299: 3-15A0 and in 2022 harmonized by the internal UNIZA Quality Management System.

The research activities of the DCIS staff are focused on the analysis and synthesis of cyber-physical systems, from theoretical models to the solution of current practice projects, including the implementation of control and information systems. In several areas, the DCIS has an exclusive position in the Slovak Republic, especially in expert activities in the field of analysis and synthesis of railway interlocking and signalling systems, focusing on the aspect of safety. The area of reliable, safe, and secure transmission and processing of information in the control of selected critical processes, whether it is complex technologies in the industry, transport, or other application areas, gives sufficient space for the activities of the entire team of the Department. The implementation of operational technologies gives the possibility of application in critical sectors of the national economy.

The department has many years of cooperation with several partner universities and commercial partners not only at the level of joint research projects, but also in exchange stay of students, researchers, and teachers.

Historical Development of the Department

The establishment and development of the Department of Control and Information Systems are related to the establishment and history of the Czech Technical University in Prague, the University of Railways in Prague, the University of Transport and Communications in Žilina, and the University of Žilina.

On October 1, 1953, the Faculty of Railway Engineering was separated from the Czech Technical University in Prague under the name Vysoká škola železničná (Railway College). It originally had five faculties: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Military Engineering. After the university was relocated to Žilina (1959 - 1962), its name was changed to the University of Transport, and the joint Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering became one of the three faculties.

Department of Blocking and Communication: 1953 - 1992, of which

  • 1953 – 1962 within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Railway College in Prague
  • 1962 – 1980 within the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Transport in Žilina
  • 1980 – 1992 within the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Transport and Communications in Žilina

Department of Information and Safety Systems: 1992 – 2002, of which

  • 1992 – 1996 within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Transport and Communications in Žilina
